Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther F001
$10.00
$8.00

  Roland Bainton
Here is an outstanding modern contribution to religious literature - a vivid portrait of the man who, because of his unshakable faith in his God, helped to bring about the Protestant Reformation. This is an authoritative, unforgettable biography of Martin Luther, the great religious leader, who entered a monastery as a youth and who, as a man, shattered the structure of the medieval church. Luther spoke out against the corrupt religious practices that then existed. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be Scriptures--rather than Popes or Councils--echoed around the world and ignited the Great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith.

  Iain Murray, Iain
John Wesley - Oxford don and itinerant preacher, intellectual and evangelist, author and man of action, upholder of the Church of England yet founder of another world-wide denomination, disagreeing with George Whitefield, yet preaching his funeral sermon - truly a many-sided man. It is no wonder that he has had many biographers. Most books on Wesley have concentrated on his leading role in the Evangelical Revival. Wesley and Men Who Followed is more concerned with the spiritual explanation of a movement which, far from dwindling at his death, increased in momentum, breadth and transforming power. Drawing from original and often little-known Methodist sources, Iain Murray?s thrilling study leads to conclusions that are of great relevance for the contemporary church.

  Stephen Mansfield
For many of those who are even familiar with his name, George Whitfield is thought of as a preacher, a man connected with the Great Awakening in the 1700s. While this is true, it is only part of the story. As a student at Oxford University, he experienced a spiritual awakening under the influence of John Wesley's Methodists and immediately began tending to prisoners, caring for the poor, and preaching the Christian gospel. He met with astounding success, in time speaking to larger crowds than had ever gathered in the history of England. Whitefield became the most famous man of his age. His impact upon the American colonies, however, may have been his most lasting gift. In seven tours of the colonies, Whitfield preached from Georgia to Maine, calling the colonists to spiritual conversion and challenging them in their sense of national destiny. He befriended men like Benjamin Franklin, converted men like Patrick Henry, and inspired men like George Washington. Furthermore, when he learned that England intended to tighten her control over the colonies, Whitefield warmed his American friends in sermon after sermon and even accompanied Benjamin Franklin to make the American case in the Court of Saint James. Many of the colonists considered him the father of their revolution.

As heir to a fortune, J. C. Ryle had a hopeful future until the day his father declared bankruptcy. In a single moment, he was stripped of everything. And yet, had this not happened, Ryle would probably not have become one of the most influential evangelical leaders of the 19th century. Along with J.I. Packer's own reflections on the life of this clergyman is a reprint of Ryle's classic, Holiness--all here in one volume to encourage Christians that, just as what could have broken Ryle became the very instrument that led him towards holiness, so too does God use our trials to lead us in our journey toward holiness.

  Gene Edward Veith
Archimedes, the discoverer of the lever, said that if he had a place to stand, he could move the world. But, of course, there is no such place to stand. However, on April 27, 1521, a young monk from a small town in Germany declared before the powers of his day, who demanded that he take back his faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that his conscience was bound by the Word of God. "Here I stand," he declared. A PLACE TO STAND summarizes the German reformer's life and topically treats his worldview, inspiring readers to delve deeper into the man whose contribution to the betterment of the world LIFE magazine in 2000 ranked as the third most significant of all time and the TORONTO GLOBE & MAIL ranked number two. Nearly five centuries after his time, we can see that Martin Luther indeed had a place to stand. And he did move the world.

  Arnold Dallimore
Many reasons combine to make this full-scale portrait of Whitefield a biography of impressive importance. Whitefield's life provides in itself a story scarcely paralleled. From the age of 24 when he commanded the largest congregations yet seen in America, until his death 30 years later, his was the voice heard by the English-speaking world. By common consent he was the greatest preacher of the 18th Century, and of his preaching gifts J. C. Ryle wrote, "No Englishman, I beleive, dead or alive, has ever equalled him." This first volume, covering the years from Whitefield's birth in 1714 to his second visit to America in 1739-40, throws new light on several aspects of Whitefield's early life and traces both ind epth and with vivid simplicity the beginning of 'the Great Awakening.'

  Glory and Honor: Bach F048

  Gregory Wilbur
Johann Sebastian Bach was a musical genius, an intellectual giant, and a gracious man. His achievement in the area of music is one of the greatest tours de force in history?on a par with or surpassing that of Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Dante, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Milton, Aristotle, Augustine, or Aquinas. Even more compelling is the fact that Bach intentionally wrote all of his music from a Christian perspective and for the glory of God. Bach worked at a crucial time in history. He combated the ideas of the Enlightenment with its elevation of human reason as the ultimate authority of everything. His struggles, musically and professionally, are those of a man seeking to maintain a high view of worship, academics, and the grounding of all life on the Word of God. As a man valiant in his convictions, he stood against the trends and fashions of his day and succeeded as a witness of the gospel to the generations who followed him. Although orphaned at an early age, Bach grew up surrounded by a life of music and quickly distinguished himself as an avid learner and apt pupil. The majority of his career was as the cantor of Leipzig?a position that required him to teach school and provide music for the town's churches every week. During this period he wrote a tremendous amount of music and fought against Enlightenment ideas that sought to undermine church worship. And while his name conjures many images, musical phrases, and half-remembered stories, the life of this colossal genius provides practical lessons in leadership for both artists and anyone who strives to serve others with excellence and integrity.

Statesman and Saint: William Wilberforce F051
$14.95

  David J. Vaughn
"God has set before me two great objects: the abolition of the slave trade and the reformation of manners". These immortal words penned by William Wilberforce in 1787 were the beginning of his lifelong crusade as a Christian statesman and philanthropist. He became a member of the British Parliament for his hometown of Hull in 1780 and represented Yorkshire in 1784, a seat he retained until 1812. This moving biography of Wilberforce tells the story of his religious conversion in 1784 and his rise to leadership of the Clapham Sect -- a group of evangelicals active in political, philanthropic, and religious causes. Under his leadership, the "Saints", as they were called, championed parliamentary and prison reforms, missionary endeavors, Bible distribution, and a host of other charitable efforts and organizations. These causes included the Church Missionary Society (established in 1799) and the British and Foreign Bible Society (founded in 1804). Statesman and Saint also describes Wilberforce's unrelenting forty-year crusade against slavery, in spite of many defeats in Parliament. He labored for eighteen years to secure the abolition of the slave trade, enduring personal criticism, deep-seated prejudice, and threats on his life for another twenty-six years before he saw the Emancipation Bill finally passed in July 1833. His influential book, A Practical View, laid the foundation for the moral elevation of the Victorian Era that followed his death only three days after the Emancipation Bill was passed in Parliament.

Then Darkness Fled: Booker T. Washington F052

  Stephen Mansfield
During his life, Booker T. Washington was among the most celebrated educators, authors, and statesmen of his day. He walked side by side with Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain, H. G. Wells, Theodore Roosevelt, and Andrew Carnegie. He was the first African American to dine with the president in the White House and the first to have tea with the queen of England. He was the first African American to receive honorary degrees from Harvard and Dartmouth, the first African American to be honored on a postage stamp, the first African American to be commemorated on a coin, the first African American to have a naval vessel named for him, and the first African American to have schools named after him. To many African Americans today, Washington points the way toward prosperity and sophistication. Today his spiritual and economic wisdom is being reclaimed as a proven path of racial advance, and his ideas are again gaining currency among upwardly mobile African Americans. In this brief volume, Stephen Mansfield reviews the course of Washington's life and highlights those principles and practices that undergirded the great educator's ability to empower all people to be the best they can be.

  Apostle of Liberty F054
$16.95

  Stephen McDowell
George Washington is one of the most significant men in all of history. As far as the advancement of liberty goes, he may well be the most significant. His contemporaries acknowledged God's hand in his selection as commander of the Continental army and later as president, believing that without Washington, America would not have prevailed in the Revolution or prospered as a new nation founded in liberty. Washington provided the leadership necessary to hold the troops together during the Revolutionary War, even in the most difficult of situations. When the war was won, he rebuffed an attempt to make him king of the United States, thereby preventing a monarchy or military rule. With his example of how presidents are to govern, he set in motion America's constitutional form of government that prior to his presidency had only existed on paper and in men's hearts. Apostle of Liberty: The World-Changing Leadership of George Washington is a biography of the great man, but in truth it is more than a mere biography. It also looks at his unique personal qualities as a leader and how these qualities marked him as a leader among leaders. In doing so, it reveals a man whose greatness did not stem from oratorical skills, superior knowledge, or brilliant military tactics, but from virtue. He understood his duty and his proper role in the fledgling nation, and he pursued it with an invincible resolution. Largely, this was due to his belief that God in his providence had chosen him to lead the new nation that was founded on liberty -- civil, religious, and economic -- and that the experiment that began under his leadership as president of the Constitutional Convention and was successful under his leadership in battle would prosper under his leadership and change the world if given the opportunity to succeed.

Anne Bradstreet was born in 1612 to Thomas and Dorothy Dudley, a dedicated Puritan couple in Lincolnshire, England. She married Simon Bradstreet in 1628, and two years later the young family sailed for Massachusetts Bay. Her father and her husband subsequently served as governors of the new colony, but her enduring fame was to rest on her poetry, which she wrote regularly and circulated in her family for their private enjoyment. In 1647 the Reverend John Woodbridge, her brother-in-law, sailed for England with a manuscript of Anne's poetry, unbeknownst to her. While there, he arranged to have the book published under the title of The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America. When the book was presented to her after publication, Anne was thoroughly embarrassed but also pleased. Eventually she owned up to the volume as her "rambling brat." Subsequent generations have valued her gifts as a poet, and her poetry remains in print to this day.

  Steven Nichols
As he did in his two other books of similar style--on Martin Luther and Jonathan Edwards--Stephen Nichols gives detailed, yet clear insight into one of the lesser-known figures of American Evangelicalism. Unlike Luther and Edwards, who lived in different time periods, J. Gresham More...Machen lived and taught closer to our modern era. He enjoyed playing football and attending baseball games, even skipping a class or two while at Princeton Seminary! But he was also very studious, and after spending a year studying in Germany became an associate professor at Princeton. His study, particularly in the area of New Testament, enabled him to teach a generation of students the heart of the gospel and stand toe-to-toe with critical scholars who would denude it of its saving power. It was this latter stance that would eventually lead to his leaving the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. One of the more touching stories was his personal ministry to a Richard Hodges, an alcoholic who became a Christian, but who continued to struggle with his alcoholism for many years. Machen found him a place to stay away from the influence of old friends and funded his rent and other living expenses for nearly 20 years. And when Hodges died, he paid for the funeral. What Nichols demonstrates from start to finish is the life of a man who lived the message of the Gospel to the fullest: He preached Jesus Christ and him crucified; taught that there can be no separation of doctrine and life; enjoyed walking in the mountains of Europe and desired that national parks and other natural resources be preserved for generations to come; engaged the culture of his day with the Christian message; and loved to entertain Princeton students on Saturday evenings with fruit and tobacco. [At that time only men attended the seminary.]

Here we learn about another side - children, moms and dads, shepherds, sick people - and missionaries who take risks to bring healing and news about Jesus to Iranian people.   These brief lessons are based on historical people and events, with insightful questions at the end of each. They will encourage families to talk about what God has done in their lives and in the lives of Christians of years gone by. "Poignant vignettes from history are captured in fascinating word pictures. Chapters open with Scripture that is fleshed out in the lives of historical figures. The impact is more in the story told, not in the lives lived, which point either to or away from Christ." John Van Dyk, Christian Renewal

  Iain Murray
Iain Murray is not here repeating biography but concentrating on three themes he regards of major significance. On the first of these ? the nature of true preaching ? there is fresh insight on what Lloyd-Jones regarded as of paramount importance. The analysis distinguishes between what was true of Lloyd-Jones as an individual and what is the permanent essence of powerful preaching. The second theme concerns the place that full assurance of salvation must have if Christianity is to be vibrant and persuasive; and the third addresses the claim that Lloyd-Jones?s understanding of the New Testament church was needlessly divisive. Contains previously unpublished material and a CD of Lloyd-Jones preaching from the Gospel of John.

  Heroes F062

  Iain Murray
The Bible no more knows a separate class of heroes than it does of saints. Because of Jesus Christ, every Christian is extraordinary and attains to glory. Yet grace so shines in some (as in the portraits of Hebrews II), that it lightens the path of many. As T. W. Tozer could write, 'Next to the Holy Scriptures, the greatest aid to the life of faith may be Christian biographies.' Iain Murray has already written on a number of Christians he specially admires. A few of them return to these pages, but with special reference to their thought - George Whitefield on Christian unity, for example. Most space, however, is given to little-known figures, including Robert Kalley and William Hewitson who shared in 'the greatest happening in modern missions', and to Charles and Mary Colcock Jones who took much-loved slaves with them to heaven. There is much new research in these pages, and reminders of how much is missed by those who fail to read of the work of God in history. Christians who know what Christ did 'yesterday' are energized to trust and serve him today. Iain H. Murray, cofounder of the Banner of Truth Trust in 1957, and its first editor, has served churches in London and Sydney. Currently retired, he continues to write and preach.

Professor John Murray (1898-1975) was recognized in his own lifetime as one of the leading Reformed theologians in the English-speaking world. Born in Scotland, he served in France during the First World War, before pursuing studies, first at the University of Glasgow, and then at Princeton Theological Seminary, USA. In 1929 he was invited to teach Systematic Theology at Princeton, and did so for one year, before joining the Faculty of the newly formed Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. There he shared with such scholars and Christian leaders as J. Gresham Machen and Cornelius Van Til in the great struggle to maintain the old Princeton tradition in theology, represented by the Hodges and B. B. Warfield. John Murray remained at Westminster until his retirement in 1966. He returned to his native Scotland, married and enjoyed a brief period of fatherhood prior to his death in 1974. A careful scholar, an eloquent lecturer, a moving preacher, and the author of many outstanding articles and books, Murray?s driving passions were for Christ, his Word, his cause, and his people. The Life of John Murray, published originally to accompany the four volumes of his Collected Writings is now available again separately in this popular and reset edition.

  Jonathan Edwards - a new biography F065
$33.00

  Iain Murray
Iain Murray believes that Edwards cannot be understood apart from his faith. Only when seen first and foremost as a Christian do his life and writings make sense. The integrity of this interpretation is confirmed in this study as Edwards is allowed on point after point to speak for himself. The result is a biography which is both factually and theologically reliable. Edwards' theology is set in the context of his everyday life in public and private. His family realtionships punctuate the narrative, adding both interest nad pathos. This outstanding study is not only an exceptional biography; it also serves as a classic illustration of how the chuch today can and should learn from its past history.

  Iain Murray
For 300 years a school of evangelical Christianity changed Scotland as a nation. Passing on the evangel of the Reformation, and growing stronger in persecution, it turned a people to the Bible, and finally gave many of its best sons and daughters to the ends of the earth. For fidelity, joyful perseverance in hardship, and improbable advance, the record remains a witness to the faith that overcomes the world. The compelling interest of this account lies in the way it draws on contemporary records - many of these Christian leaders being authors as well as men of action. Iain Murray's narrative explores this rich heritage and underlines its remarkable relevance for our own day. While not a Scottish Church history, this is a gripping introduction to the many glorious successes, and some of the painful failures of the church, from the days of John Knox to those of Horatius Bonar. Explaining this panoramic tapestry are the words of Knox's own commentary, 'God gave his Holy Spirit to simple men in great abundance.' As various recent publications have indicated, Scotland exercised an influence on world history out of all proportion to its size. But the real reason for this has been obscured. It will be found here, however. And in the discovery of it the reader will be introduced to a wealth of little-known literature that is a vital part of the inheritance of the whole Christian church.

Finally, here is a contemporary, definitive biography of James Boyce, the nineteenth-century, visionary founder of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where Boyce served as chairman of the faculty, and as professor of systematic and practical theology, and church government. Tom Nettles shows how Boyce gave his life to training Baptist theological students in orthodox, Reformed, experiential theology. Nettles does with Boyce what Iain Murray did with Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Without resorting to hagiography, Nettles offers fascinating details of God?s great work through Boyce?s intriguing relationships with other notables, such as Archibald Alexander, Samuel Miller, Charles Hodge, Basil Manly Jr., Francis Wayland, F. B. Meyer, John A. Broadus, William Williams, and C. H. Toy. Ultimately this captivating biography moves us to worship God. Make it your must-read biography this year .

Robert Lewis Dabney: A Southern Presbyterian Life F071

$20.00

  Sean Michael Lewis
Robert Lewis Dabney (1820?1898) was a Presbyterian theologian and educator who served on the faculties of Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, the University of Texas, and Austin Theological Seminary. Those who knew him?both friends and foes?viewed him as larger than life, ?closer to a biblical prophet than a theological professor,? writes Sean Lucas. As this biography explains, ?Dabney was far more complex than either historians or admirers concede.? He was ?in many ways a representative man, one who embodied the passions and contradictions of nineteenth-century Southerners.? As such he ?provides a window into the postbellum Southern Presbyterian mind? and a reminder of how important nineteenth-century theology is for contemporary issues and debates. ?A model biography?accurate, interesting, sympathetic, and critical. Dr. Lucas has mastered his material, and the result is a portrait of Dabney that will live on. Not only do we come to know the great Virginian better in this book, but we also are given a wonderfully nuanced treatment of the political, intellectual, and ecclesiastical climate of the nineteenth-century South.?

This biography, written by a provocative, prolific historian, gives readers insights into Nevin?s critique of the revivalist tradition and shows how it applies today. Hart recovers a nearly forgotten nineteenth-century theologian and demonstrates his ongoing relevance. This book is extensively documented, and includes a substantial bibliographical essay and an index. Nevin (1803?1886) taught at Mercersburg Seminary when he wrote The Anxious Bench (1843) and The Mystical Presence (1846), volumes dealing with revivalism and the Lord?s Supper, respectively. The last ten years have seen a revival of interest in this theologian, who was a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and who substituted for Hodge during his two-year study-leave in Europe.
