You've been misled if you think the Book of Ecclesiastes is a glum, pessimistic volume lacking hope. And you're wrong if you believe the writer was a soured, despairing cynic who could see only the negative side of life.
There is pessimism in the book - but it is pessimism about "life under the sun." there is nothing but optimism about the lot of those who serve God.
In this original translation, the full impact of Solomon's wisdom shines forth. His understanding of life's foibles and the vanity of living for this world are countered by his frequent exhortations to rejoice . . . and have a good meal! |

A Commentary on Amos. All round the Near-East the roar of the Divine Lion sounded; Amos heard it and was compelled to prophesy. His words of judgment on the nations and on the professsing church echo through the centuries and speak again today with unnerving relevance to contemporary society. Will what we have built in our churches stand the test? |

"No matter how familiar you may be with the Psalms, an incredible amount of information and insight can be gained through this commentary."--Christian Retailing
Whether you're a serious Bible student probing through Psalm 19 or a first-time reader inspired by the promise of Psalm 23, this first volume on the book of Psalms explores each of the first forty-one psalms, uncovering deep reflections, wisdom for living, and verses of praise, confidence, and repentance.
- Psalm 1 stresses the importance of God's guidance in one's life.
- Psalm 16 foretells Jesus' resurrection, a startling and impressive declaration for the time.
- Psalm 23 portrays life as a pilgrimage, where God is provider, comforter, and friend.
This expositional commentary on one of the Bible's most popular books combines careful scholarship and clear communication in a verse-by-verse and section-by-section reading of the biblical text. Integrating thoughtful interpretation with contemporary insight for daily living, James Montgomery Boice explains the meaning of the text and relates the text's concerns to the church, Christianity, and the world in which we live.

James M. Boice |
|
|
|

In his commentary on the Book of Genesis, Dr. Boice combines biblical interpretation with contemporary implications for living. Each of the three volumes has a single, distinctive focus. Creation and Fall, Genesis 1-11 (volume 1) focuses on creation, the beginning of human sinfulness, the human family and society, and divine judgment. These chapters establish God's relationship to the cosmos and to all peoples of the earth. |

James M. Boice |

|
| |
No man in Scripture lived more consistently and completely for God than did Joseph, a favorite son of Jacob. In times of adversity and in times of prosperity-both of which offered the temptation to deny God and his lordship-Joseph remained steadfast.
Living by Faith is the third and final volume on Genesis. Volume 1 focused on God's relationship to the cosmos and to all peoples of the earth. Volume 2 traced the "new beginning" of God's plan of redemption. In volume 3, Boice follows the complete story of Joseph, a "man for all seasons." By exploring Joseph's loyalty to God, Boice presents him as an example for Christians today. |

Andrew Bonar |

|
|
| |
Although largely unread by modern readers, Bonar points out in this commentary that Leviticus contains more of the very words of God than any other book. This commentary evolved from notes that had been written for the author's own use. It is marked by a simple style that looks at much of the typology found in Leviticus. Largely, it examines that typology with the use of the book of Hebrews, with many references to other books as well. This is a commentary that will make a good addition to any Bible student's library. |

Charles Bridges |

|
| |
In this 1846 writing, Charles Bridges asserts that Proverbs does not generally receive the esteem it should. Going verse by verse, Bridges gives homilectical and practical advice, rather than presenting a technical study. Charles Spurgeon referred to Bridge's commentary as the best on Proverbs, saying, "Whilst explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights." |

Because Calvin was a sound exegete, little of what he wrote is dated. Althought his treatment of the early chapters is thorough, it is not disproportionate, and the later narratives concering Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph are not passed over hastily. Indeed, Calvin excels in bringing out the principles of God's dealings with men, as individuals and in covenant, and in showing faithfully yet tenderly the human weakness and sin all too evident in Genesis. |

The absolute sovereignty of God and the triumph of his righteousness are the principal themes of 1 Samuel. In tracing the development of Israel from the anarchy of the period of the Judges, from Samuel the prophet and kingmaker through Saul, the people's choice, to David, God's chosen king - the hand of God is seen at work.
The true consequences of rebellion against the Lord are shown. There is no glamour in the Bible's representation of sin. Saul clings to his sins and perishes. But the gospel shines through too. Samuel and David cleave to the Lord and are clothed with the robes of redemption. The reader is pointed to the victory of Christ, the true King of whom David is only a picture, who is saving his people from their sins this very day.

The history of David - the unfolding drama of 2 Samuel - gives us a slice of life in the real world. We see people in their true colours: the petty, selfish, murderous, yet fiercely loyal, Joab; the war-lord Abner, honourable, perhaps, but only when it suited him; the sad, incompetent Ish-Bosheth, alone and palely loitering through his hundrum colourless life; and the miserable and vicious sons of Rimmon, who murdered Ish-Bosheth in his sleep. And there is David, the man after Gods own heart, borne along by his regal calling on the tide of Gods mighty providential acts.
Gordon Keddie draws out the lessons of 2 Samuel and encourages us to look expectantly for the blessing of God in our day since the story of David is a picture of Davids royal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Mediator-King who rules over all things and will, in the fulness of his time, deliver up his consummated kingdom to His Father and ours.
... a scholarly work ... This book is a penetrating study of Israels history during the times of David ... There is continual application to the life of the saint in the twentieth century.

The message of Amos is pre-eminently a message of new life. The message, however, comes in the context of a nation under judgement. Israel hid the emptiness and godliness of a corrupt society behind an apathetic and nominal outward religion, like so many today.
Gods view of our society is revealed in Amos in no uncertain terms. While no refuge is offered for those who reject or disregard Gods will, shining through the gloom most brightly is the precious gift of new life through faith in Gods Saviour, his Son Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Method of Dealing with his Chosen People
"Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better then they?" Matthew 6:26.
Subtitled, The Lord's method of dealing with His chosen people, Spurgeon shows this is on the basis of His own promises and the pledge of Himself to bring them to pass. After reading these chapters, you will have your faith challenged to lay hold upon the sure promises of God. This volume is a follow-up companion to Spurgeon's 'All of Grace'.
"It is an eminently practical volume, the fruit of a ripe experience; as simple in its form as it is searching in its exposure of counterfeit religion; and we have no doubt that many will have reason to rejoice that they made its acquaintance. As Mr. Spurgeon remarks in one of his homely sentences: he who looked into his accounts and found that his business was a losing one was saved from bankruptcy". Christian Leader

Here the meaning of the prophecy of Joel is presented in an easy to understand style. Joel deals with significant issues that have many parallels to our own time today. It is a reminder for the people of God to heart felt repentance and the glorious truth of the blessing of the Lord in the renewal of the earth by the outpouring of the Spirit on men and women, young and old, Jew and Gentile. |
| |
The "Weeping Prophet," the rabbis said, began wailing the moment he was born. Jeremiah had reason to weep--he witnessed the devastating consequences of life without God.
Sadly, the relativism Jeremiah saw in ancient Israel predominates in America today. That's why his words are so relevant for our lives. Better than anyone else, Jeremiah exemplifies through his courage, passion, even his sufferings, how believers can live for God in a society that has turned against Him.
While the book of Jeremiah shared the last, desperate days of the Jerusalem he loved, Lamentations expresses the cries of his heart. Yet they reveal more than the prophet's grief--they are an attempt to reflect on the meaning of human suffering. Lamentations gives voice to the deepest agonies, with the hope that some comfort may come from crying out to God for mercy. Together the two books illustrate the eternal principle that man reaps what he sows.
It is a lesson the world--and the church--needs to hear. |

E.J. Young |
|
|
|
| |
Edward Young's purpose in this commentary is to give the minister and serious reader an accurate sense of the text. For Young, the key issues in the interpretation of Daniel lay not in the tension between unintelligent obscurantism and scientific scholarship, but in the difference between a believing scholarship and a sceptical rationalism. Young therefore suggests that faith in Scripture is the prerequisite for understanding them. Edward Young was an excellent language scholar and Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Seminary. |

|

Young's classic 3-volume commentary engages in a line-by-line exegesis of the Book of Isaiah, setting interpretation firmly in the context of Isaiah's archaeological, cultural, and intellectual background. Young's conclusions are theologically conservative, and though he believes Isaiah to be a unified, single-author book, he respectfully interacts with opposing views. Includes bibliographies and indexes. Volume 1 covers chapters 1-18; Volume 2 looks at chapters 19-39; Volume 3 surveys chapters 40-66. |

Waltke |

The embodiment of God's wisdom for everyday living, the Book of Proverbs has been quoted by Jews, Christians, and Muslims for centuries. These maxims, born out of personal experience, are passed on from father to son, from teacher to student. They warn of manifold dangers to avoid, point out simple truths to be remembered. Anyone who follows these adages will evince a maturity beyond his years. Waltke, who has been researching the text for over 25 years, is fully abreast of the most recent archaeological, literary, and textual discoveries. His commentary is filled with penetrating details for scholars, yet it is his unpedantic style which will appeal to pastors and general readers. This mammoth study, one of the most comprehensive on the market, will retrieve from relative obscurity the wealth of Israel's ethical treasure. |

Wheels within wheels, bizarre angelic beings, and a valley full of dry bones. What is the meaning of these "great obscurities"? When properly understood, the prophet's visions speak a message of hope to exiles---you are not alone or abandoned by God. Iain Duguid's Ezekiel reminds us the message is as relevant today as in Ezekiel's day. This world is not our home, but we can learn to live as exiles, with endurance and hope. |

"Adams and Fisher do a sterling job in disclosing the meaning of the symbolism of Daniel...Perhaps the most interesting and gripping element of this book is the analysis it provides of the highly-controversial meaning of the 'seventy weeks' of Daniel. The treatment of this question alone makes the reading of this book worthwhile and mandatory..." - R.C. Sproul |

James Boice |

|
| |
Through Daniel's visions and experiences as an exile in Babylon, the book of Daniel gives us a clearer understanding of history than any other part of the Bible. Daniel also makes it clear that God is in control of all human events that have unfolded or will occur in the future. At the same time, he shows us how to live for God in ungodly days-like our own. In this volume of James Montgomery Boice's popular commentary series, pastors, Bible students, and laypersons will find analysis of Daniel's illuminating insights into history. Boice explains the meaning of the text verse by verse and subject by subject. Its clear language and approachable style make this commentary accessible and enlightening. Within the pages are important lessons on: -God's control over history -God's control over rulers -perseverance in faith -the sin God will not tolerate -the coming of the Messiah -living for God amidst opposition James Montgomery Boice (1938-2000) was senior pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was also president and cofounder of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the parent organization of The Bible Study Hour, on which Boice was a speaker for more than thirty years. |

Zechariah: Reformed Expository Commentary D540 |

Richard Phillips |
|
|
|
| |
The Book of Zechariah records the prophetic message of Zechariah to the community that had returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile and was charged with rebuilding the temple and city. The physical return was meant to prompt a spiritual and theological return to faith in the Lord. Zechariah called the people to such a true return and reassured them of the Lord?s willingness to receive them and restore to them the promised blessings. It is a book whose eschatological perspective is of special value to Christians today who labor for reformation and long for revival. Rick Phillips has produced a gem of a book on the prophet Zechariah! It is popular in its presentation but reflects a wide reading in Puritan theology, critical commentaries, and conservative Reformed writers. In a word, it has all the hallmarks of an edifying commentary: it is historically sensitive, it is robustly theological, christological, and appropriately practical. Phillips reminds us in his methodology that what God has done and will do for the people of God always precedes what God expects of His people. I wholeheartedly commend this work for pastors and lay people. |

Genesis is a book about beginnings- the creation of the universe, the formation of mankind, the establishment of the covenant and the founding of the people of Israel. Many Christians regard the Old Testament as merely a collection of interesting stories to be taught in Sunday school, but which have little application for the church today except as providing examples or illustrations from a bygone, almost barbarous, age. The truth is that almost every important church doctrine is found in seed form in the book of Genesis creation, fall, redemption, the doctrine of the Trinity, the promise of the Messiah, the establishment of the covenant and the hope of the resurrection are all to be found here. A seed is planted in Genesis and then it sprouts and grows throughout the rest of the Bible until it finds its fruition in the person and work of Jesus Christ. God created the universe; it fell through the sin of humanity; and now God is in the process of redeeming it through the work of Christ. This latter work continues even now until the time of the end when all things will be put in their final place.
Dr Currid provides solid exegesis in an accessible way, matched with practical application that displays the relevance of this Old Testament book for the twenty-first century. This volume covers the period from the creation up to the death of Abraham and the marriage of Isaac and Rebekah. |

Faithful God: An Exposition Of The Book Of Ruth D518 |

|
| |
The book of Ruth is in multum in parvo (much in little). It contains far more about God than its size would suggest; it records experiences of joy and sorrow; it tells a story of home life, romance and marriage, of unexpected conversion and radical consecration. Here is a vital part of the biblical narrative of redemptive history, focusing like a microscope on part of the detailed preparation God made as he sovereignly directed history towards the coming of the Saviour Jesus Christ. This book helps us to understand Christ himself--and, indeed the whole Bible--more fully and clearly, and teaches us much about God's grace and providence. The writer encourages us to "enjoy God and his Word." Here is a thoroughly enjoyable and heart-warming book, which includes as a helpful appendix a letter by John Newton on the guidance of God. This study of the book of Ruth has its origins in a series of memorable addresses given at the English Conference of the Evangelical Movement of Wales in Aberystwyth in August 1996. |

The design for the Preacher's Commentary gives the reader an overall outline of each book of the Bible. Following the introduction, which reveals the author's approach and salient background on the book, each chapter of the commentary provides the Scripture to be exposited. The New King James Bible has been chosen for the Preacher's Commentary because it combines with integrity the beauty of language, underlying Hebrew and Greek textual basis, and thought-flow of the 1611 King James Version, while replacing obsolete verb forms and other archaisms with their everyday contemporary counterparts for greater readability. Reverence for God is preserved in the capitalization of all pronouns referring to the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit. Readers who are more comfortable with another translation can readily find the parallel passage by means of the chapter and verse reference at the end of each passage being exposited. The paragraphs of exposition combine fresh insights to the Scripture, application, rich illustrative material, and innovative ways of utilizing the vibrant truth for his or her own life and for the challenge of communicating it with vigor and vitality. |

The book of Daniel is both familiar and unfamiliar to many Christians. The stories of the fiery furnace and Daniel in the lion's den are the staples of children's Bible story books and Sunday school classes. Yet the latter chapters of Daniel's vision are more unfamiliar and daunting to most believers, who may have been exposed to a variety of end-times speculations constructed from an amalgam of these texts and others drawn from elsewhere in the Bible. But Iain M. Duguid reminds Christians that Daniel gives us more than moral lessons or a prophetic timetable. The whole of the book points us to Christ, whether as the one greater than Daniel who has perfectly lived an exilic life of service and separation for us or as the exalted heavenly Son of Man who took flesh amongst us. |

The Book of Proverbs has one central message (how to gain wisdom) and deals with an extensive array of practical topics including vocation, financial stewardship, moral purity, and how to have successful relationships. Here, Jim Newheiser guides the reader through all the main aspects of the teaching of Proverbs while also emphasizing how these great, life-transforming truths are rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jim Newheiser... does a marvellous job of arranging and explaining the contents of the book in a very practical way. I found myself being challenged and receiving fresh insights for my own personal life and for my ministry to others. I commend it without reservation. Dr Wayne Mack |

Does God help those who help themselves? That may seem to be the message of the books of Esther and Ruth. Yet a closer reading shows a gracious and sovereign God at work, one who uses obviously flawed people?unable even to help themselves?to rescue his people and prepare for the coming of Christ. Esther and Ruth is part of the Reformed Expository Commentary series, aimed at both pastors and lay teachers. Each volume in the series provides exposition that gives careful attention to biblical text, is doctrinally Reformed, focuses on Christ through the lens of redemptive history, and applies the Bible to our contemporary setting. |

James Boice |
|
|
|
| |
"The secret of success is to know God's Word, speak about it, meditate on it, and then, above all, do it. In God's world there is no substitute for full obedience." Joshua was a soldier. According to James Montgomery Boice, he was "one of the most extraordinary military commanders of all time." But what sets Joshua apart from his predecessors and successors, says Boice, was his obedience to the Word of God. This insightful commentary follows a chosen commander whose obedience successfully brought him through the Jewish conquest of Canaan. Chapter by chapter and verse by verse, Boice explores the entire book of Joshua, from Joshua's military commissioning to the crossing of the Jordan River, from the Israelite victory at Jericho to the division of Canaan among the twelve tribes, which set the stage for God's people to prosper forever in obedience to him. James Montgomery Boice (1938-2000) was senior pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was also president and cofounder of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the parent organization of The Bible Study Hour, on which Boice was a speaker for more than thirty years. |

Nehemiah was a great leader. According to James Montgomery Boice, Nehemiah's leadership abilities were born from his submission to God, his ability to focus on the right goals, his wisdom in handling complex situations, and his courage to act decisively. "But the most important thing about Nehemiah," says Boice, "is that he was a man of God, and because he was so close to God in prayer and personal piety, he was able to draw from God the wisdom, patience, skill, and perseverance he needed." This insightful commentary follows a chosen leader through the great task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem 150 years after it was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar. Through analysis of eight dynamics of the Old Testament text, Boice explores all aspects of Nehemiah's work, from taking command to getting the work done, from dealing with oppression to dedicating the wall and establishing Jerusalem as a city under God. |
