  Sinclair Ferguson
When John Mark wrote out his "good news" about Jesus two thousand years ago, his Gospel was a completely new kind of book. No one had ever written one before. In fact no one would have known what a Gospel was... What made the Gospel of Mark unique was this: it was not written merely as the memoir of Jesus as a great man, not even as the greatest man who had ever lived. Rather it was meant to persuade its readers that Jesus was the Son of God...Who is Jesus of Nazareth? What is the good news(gospel) about him?...This commentary provides us with Mark's answer.

  Mark Johnston
John's Gospel has been described as so simple that a child may wade in it and so profound that an elephant can swim there! This shows how the same Gospel can be both a point of entry for those who are new to the Christian faith and a favourite haunt for those who know and love the Bible well. Mark Johnston guides us through John's account of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He shows that the Gospel of John can be seen as the reflective Gospel, a selection of the works and words of Christ for detailed contemplation. John takes us by the hand and leads us into the depths and mysteries of Christ's Person and the wonders He has accomplished - so that the reader should come to living faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, and have eternal life in His Name.

  Gordon Keddie
The Gospel of John has been called 'the most amazing book that was ever written'. Like no other book of the Bible, it contains the entire message of God's Word in microcosm. It takes us from eternity to eternity and shows the centrality of Jesus Christ to our lives, to human history and to the meaning of the cosmos itself. For that reason, it must be at the very core of the preaching and evangelistic ministry of the Christian church. People need to hear and understand the message of the cross as expounded by John. In this commentary, which arises from preaching through John's Gospel several times in the course of over a quarter of a century of pastoral ministry, Gordon Keddie's approach is thoroughly expository and keeps the focus on the proclamation of Jesus Christ to the heart, mind and conscience of the reader. This volume will prove helpful, not only to preachers, but to all who want to be gripped and moulded by the brilliance and clarity of this marvellous Gospel and the Saviour it so winsomely proclaims.

This second volume on the Gospel of John shows how Jesus dealt with the hostility that began to arise among the religious leaders in regard to various practices of faith and how he didn't allow their hostility to deter him from his path. (6:10-15) "Murmurs of Disbelief" (6:41-47) "None like Jesus" (7:45-52) "The Last Enemy" (8:51) This expositional commentary on one of the Bible's most popular books combines careful scholarship and clear communication in a verse-by-verse and section-by-section reading of the biblical text.   "No religion is stronger than its god," says James Montgomery Boice, " and in the case of Christianity, no Christians have ever been stronger than their knowledge of the true God and their desire to obey and glorify him." God and History asks what in the world is God doing to help Christians gain a better understanding of who he is? With life-empowering descriptions of God's sovereignty and purpose, James Montgomery Boice shows us a balanced view of predestination and other issues that sometimes trouble us. Boice discusses: "The Potter and the Clay" (9:19-21) "Two Kinds of Righteousness" (10:3) "Heart Belief and Mouth Confession" (10:10) "The Outstretched Hands of God" (10:21) "A Future for God's Ancient People" (11:23-24) This expositional commentary on one of the Bible's most popular books combines careful scholarship and clear communication in a verse-by-verse and section-by-section reading of the biblical text. Integrating thoughtful interpretation with contemporary insight for daily living, James Montgomery Boice explains the meaning of the text and relates the text's concerns to the church, Christianity, and the world in which we live.

  Thomas R. Schreiner
In the latest addition to BECNT, Pauline scholar Thomas Schreiner presents a fresh analysis of the substantive Book of Romans. It features many distinctives. "I have tried to write a scholarly commentary that fulfills the goals of brevity and lucidity," Schreiner explains. "One of my goals has been to trace the flow of thought in the letter so that the reader can understand how the argument unfolds. I have also tried to wrestle with the meaning of Romans theologically. . . . In particular, I have attempted to demonstrate inductively that the glory of God is the central theme that permeates the letter." Each exegetical unit of the commentary is divided into four parts: (1) introduction, theme summary, and structural outline; (2) translation; (3) paragraph-by-paragraph exegesis and exposition; and (4) additional notes that comment on unique themes of a passage, interpretive problems, textual variants, and other critical issues. Pastors, students, and scholars will find Romans an easy-to-use, yet comprehensive, resource

  John Murray
This is John Murray's commentary that was originally written as a two-volume work for the NICOT, which has been replaced by Douglas Moo's commentary. Due to Murray's lasting value, however, the publisher has kept this commentary in print as an independent volume. This commentary is characterized by careful, in-depth scholarship and spiritual insight. After discussing the authorship, occasion, purpose, and contents of Romans, Murray proceeds with a verse-by-verse exegesis of the text. Also included are 10 appendices in which issues such as the meaning of justification, the relation of Isaiah 53:11 to the message of Romans, Karl Barth on Romans 5, and other subjects in Romans are discussed. This work will benefit scholars, pastors, and students in their efforts to understand what is perhaps Paul's most profound writing. John Murray was born in Scotland, was educated in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Princeton, and spent most of his career teaching systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Christians have always found the book of Acts to be enjoyable, exciting and encouraging. Here we find our own roots as the followers of Jesus and learn what it means to be citizens of heaven while living upon the earth. If the Gospels tell us what the gospel is, Acts tells us what the gospel does. Acts is first and foremost the history of the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. It brings together two great promises of another Counsellor, who would lead the disciples into all truth and the Great Commission to preach the gospel to the whole world in the assurance that he would be with them always, to the very end of the age. Acts is also the record of costly campaigning against a fiercely resistant enemy, over the eternal destiny of lost men and women. The sounds of battle echo from almost every scene. But so also does the scent of victory, as lives are changed and the light of Christ spreads from nation to nation! As the book of Acts closes, the work still goes on. The fulfilment of Christs commission continues today as his followers take up the unfinished task: You will be my witnesses ...to the ends of the earth. The Bondage Of The Will

"It is changed people who change everything," says James Montgomery Boice. "If you have been called to faith in Jesus Christ, you are part of the radically changed community, the new humanity." Volume 4, The New Humanity, explores the life applications of theology Paul set out in the final four chapters of the book of Romans. Calling all Christians to renew their understanding of the great doctrines of Christianity, Boice shows how we can live by these teachings even today. He discusses: "God's Good, Pleasing, and Perfect Will" (12:2) "Right Living at All Times" (12:17) "To Each His Due" (13:6-7) "Understanding the Times" (13:11) "Check-off Points for a Good Church" (15:14) "The Full Measure of God's Blessing" (15:29) This expositional commentary on one of the Bible's most popular books combines careful scholarship and clear communication in a verse-by-verse and section-by-section reading of the biblical text. Integrating thoughtful interpretation with contemporary insight for daily living, James Montgomery Boice explains the meaning of the text and relates the text's concerns to the church, Christianity, and the world in which we live.

"Philippians is so simple and at the same time so profound that it speaks profitably to Christians at every level of spiritual understanding, age, and maturity." As James Montgomery Boice points out, no book in the Bible is so filled with joy as Philippians. Even though Paul faced possible execution for his faith, he managed to remain joyful in the midst of terrible circumstances. Beyond providing encouragement, Philippians also contains a wealth of great themes. As Boice explains, it covers most of the major doctrines of the Christian faith and is at the same time extremely practical.

This book is part of a series of books prepared to explain and apply the message of Scripture. These are not technical commentaries but they are based on sound scholarship. The aim is exposition of Scripture informally as if one were talking with a friend. The letters to the Thessalonians are the Apostle Paul's warmly friendly letters to the Christians there. He loved and appreciated these early believers, appreciating the difficulties under which they lived. Both Jews and gentiles opposed them. The study is divided into 26 sections on 1 Corinthians and 13 on 2 Corinthians. A group study guide planned for 13 sessions is provided. The material also lends itself to individual use for personal study or for use in families.

  John Calvin
John Calvin was raised Catholic in a French middle-class family, and as a student he was interested in humanism and the Protestant reformation movements. He trained for the priesthood at the University of Paris, but, encouraged by his attorney father, he also studied law at the university in Orleans. As a result of his preaching the reformation doctrines, he was forced to flee France for fear of persecution. In 1535 he left the country with his friend Nicholas Cop, a rector at the University of Paris who announced his support for Martin Luther. It was at this time that Calvin developed his own personal theology. The following year, Calvin published his "Institutes of the Christian Religion" in Basel, Switzerland, a now-standard work of Protestant thought and belief. He was asked to lead the reformation movement in Geneva, which he accepted, yet he was banished from the city two years later. In Strasbourg, he met and married the widow Idelette de Bure; the couple had one child who died in infancy. It was in Strasbourg that Calvin published the first of many commentaries on the Bible. In 1541, Calvin returned to Geneva, where he played a significant role in the city's religious, political, and civic life until his death.

The message of Paul's letter to the Christians at Colosse is a message that many do not want to hear: the all-sufficiency of Christ. Many today "accept Christ," but they find their christ inadequate: His righteousness alone does not justify; our faithfulness and works are also a condition of justification. Their christ is not one "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge," for his Word must be supplemented by common sense, philosophy, psychology, or science. The false christs of contemporary religion bear little resemblance to the all-sufficient Christ Paul preached to the Colossians, and Dr. Clark's comments reinforce the contrast between Biblical Christianity and contemporary religion.

  Gordon H. Clark
Peter wrote to Christians scattered across the face of the Earth to encourage them in time of persecution. It is instructive to note how he encouraged them. Peter did not encourage the persecuted believers by speaking of the coming social and political ascendancy of the institutional church. Peter did not suggest that the destruction of Jerusalem by Rome was their hope. He failed to mention St. Constantine the Great; he offered no future event "in time and on Earth" as the basis of their hope. To encourage the poor Christians, Peter spoke of their irrevocable election to salvation in Christ Jesus, an "inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, that does not fade away, reserved in Heaven for you who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." Such a salvation is derided by both atheists and churchgoers as "pie in the sky." But for Peteróand for all Christiansóit is hope that does not fade away.

In some of his letters to the New Testament churches, the Apostle Paul briefly warns against man-made philosophy; in 1 Corinthians he spends the better part of three chapters emphasizing this point: God has made all the ìwisdomî of this world foolishness. It is disappointing that many philosophers, theologians, and churchgoers have not understood Paulís argument, and a crime that they have rejected his conclusion. It seems to be a besetting sin of churchgoers and theologians that they tend to integrate the ìwisdomî of this worldówhether it be science, natural theology, psychology, or philosophyówith Scripture. But Paul does not; and this commentary reflects Paulís commitment to the doctrine of propositional revelation alone as the source of knowledge and wisdom.   The Incarnation in the Gospels is an unusual book: a commentary, but on a theme rather than a particular Bible book. It deals with the incarnation, Christmas, in Matthew (?The Hope of Israel?), Luke (?Songs for the Savior?) and John (?The Coming of the Light?). The authors are Reformed in their theology, reliable in their understanding of the passages, and all of them fascinating writers. This book will be a great help to pastors preparing series of Christmas sermons and to lay believers trying to distinguish the real biblical teaching from all the Christmas fluff.

With 59 commands in 108 verses, the epistle of James has an obvious zeal for law. In his imperatives, James directly communicates the royal law, the law of King Jesus (2:8). Thus, the hasty reader will not see much of the gospel in James. But as Doriani reveals in his insightful commentary, the double mention of God's grace at the rhetorical climax of the book shows that the gospel of James is the message of God's grace for sinners.

The Apostle Paul wrote the little house churches of the ancient metropolis of Ephesus this amazing truth: through such as you the purposes of Christ will fill the world; he is transforming all things for you and through you. Now Dr. Bryan Chapell, noted preacher and teacher of preaching, unfolds Paul's glorious description of how this triumph of the church will occur and what our roles are in Christ's ultimate victory. This REC Commentary on Ephesians is intended to be a true homiletical commentary, serving the pulpit needs of pastors. Indepth exegetical analysis is provided in a sermon format, providing outlines, pastoral explanation, illustrations, and applications for each passage.   Sinclair Ferguson
Ferguson skillfully leads us through this wonderful letter, explaining its teaching with masterful simplicity and showing its importance and relevance for the church today. Designed to be used by individuals, in family devotions, or by groups, each volume of the Let?s Study series features an exposition of the text of Scripture and contains a study guide. If Romans is, humanly speaking, the most impressive of Paul's letters, then Ephesians is probably the most elegant. In its opening doxology blessings cascade down upon the reader. In its closing verses the smell of the battlefield lies heavily in the air and through the smoke of war we see Christians, fully clad in the armour of spiritual warfare, still standing. From beginning to end Ephesians sets before us the wonder of God's grace, the privilege of belonging to the church, and the pattern of life-transformation the gospel produces. In Let's Study Ephesians Sinclair Ferguson skillfully leads us through this wonderful letter, explaining its teaching with masterful simplicity and showing its importance and relevance to the church today.

This commentary originated with a series of Sunday evening sermons preached at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. In keeping with the subject matter of the book itself, the focus of the exposition is on its practical implications for life in the local church. The author chose to preach from this New Testament book early in his ministry, so as to get the full benefit of Paul?s instructions to Timothy as a young man in gospel ministry.

  James Boice
The three letters of John found near the end of the New Testament have a tendency to be oversimplified or simply overlooked in the study of the Scriptures. However, though these letters may on the surface seem less applicable to our time because they address heresies and church management issues that seem unique to the early church, careful study reveals just how contemporary these concerns are. In this volume of James Montgomery Boice's popular commentary series, pastors, Bible students, and laypersons will find analysis of John's timeless messages of righteousness, truth, and love. Boice explains the meaning of the text verse by verse and subject by subject. Clear language and an approachable style make this commentary accessible and enlightening. Within these pages are important lessons on: the essence of Christianity, assurance of salvation, identification of false teachings, proper treatment of God's servants, interaction between the church and the world, living a righteous life. This is a special price for a limited time only.

With this new volume on John, the TNTC series not only welcomes an important contribution to Gospel studies but also caps a revision-and-replacement program keeping TNTC at the forefront of current biblical commentary series whose volumes are both accessible and affordable. Writing specifically for general readers of the Bible, Colin Kruse shows plainly what the text of this beloved Gospel actually says and what it means. The commentary itself provides section-by-section discussion that highlights the Gospel's main themes and overall message.   Dr. Clark's commentaries on four of Paul's letters, Ephesians, Colossians, and First and Second Thessalonians, plus his monograph on Logical Criticisms of Textual Criticism, are combined in this one large volume. This new volume is completely re-typeset and fully indexed, and it contains the most up-to-date compilation of Dr. Clark's bibliography. All of Dr. Clark's commentaries are non-technical, written for the ordinary Christian, and are designed to explain the content of Paul's letters, not speculate about historical or theological matters on which the text is silent. Dr. Clark believed that the Bible is its own infallible interpreter, and to understand its message, one need not master some other discipline, such as archaeology or ancient history.

As we open the New Testament, Matthew, the first Gospel writer, immediately announces a new beginning. He declares that the day that has now dawned is the new age predicted by all the prophets, the time of the Messiah, the true son of David and of Abraham. This is the thrilling message Matthew brings to us. God has begun something new. Is it really possible that all things can be made new? Can our lives be made new? Can the world be made new? The answer of Matthew and the New Testament is a resounding 'Yes!' In this easy-to-understand book, Mark Ross guides the reader through the 28 chapters of Matthew's Gospel and helps us to apply its teaching to our daily lives. He shows us that in the Person and work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the long-expected kingdom of God has arrived, and life and salvation are offered to all the nations of the earth. As the writer says, 'What a message this is - what drama, what pathos, what love, what glory, what longing fulfilled, what hope and promise for us today!'

"Few studies can be more profitable to Christians today than that of the Epistle to the Hebrews," says Richard Phillips. "Written . . . to a group of Jewish Christians facing persecution in the mid-first century AD, the words of this book speak to Christians everywhere about standing firm in Jesus Christ." Hebrews captures the challenges and pitfalls of people throughout the ages and shows both why and how to press on in the faith. Its message of warning and hope centers on the surpassing supremacy of Jesus, seen often from the vantage point of the Old Testament.

When Paul arrived, Corinth was prospering as 'the forth largest city in the Roman empire, a commercial bridge between East and West. It had two harbors - one on the Aegean and on the other on the Adriatic Sea. Situated at such an important cross-roads of the ancient world, it became notorious for its sexual vice and immorality. The description of Gentile sin in Romans 1:18-32 fits Corinth exactly.' 2 Corinthians - 'Paul's most autobiographical letter, in which he opens his heart more than in any other' - shows the 'privileges and pressures of pastoral work'. It also contains 'unique passages about perseverance under trials, the nature of Christian service, evangelism and giving.' Designed to be used by individuals, in family devotions, or by groups, each volume of the Let?s Study series features an exposition of the text of Scripture and contains a study guide.

  Ian Hamilton
Like much of the New Testament, John's three letters were written to deal with pressing difficulties being experienced in the first-century churches. False teachers, whom John calls 'antichrists', were denying fundamental Christian truths and deeply troubling the Christians whom the aged apostle loved and called his 'little children'. John writes with warmth, seriousness, and urgency to correct this situation. He shows that sound doctrine is vital, not only to the well-being of Christians, but to their very existence, since error leads to deception, darkness, and ultimately the destruction of those who embrace it. The message of John's letters is of perennial relevance, and especially important in our own day. Ian Hamilton's concise commentary provides a warmly pastoral explanation of John's timeless message, pointing the reader to the Word made flesh, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the answer to all problems in the church, whether in the first or the twenty-first century.

  Derek Thomas
Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia seems to burst on the reader like a sudden storm. The issues it raises still generate controversy, even after two thousand years of church history. In large measure this is because what was at stake when Paul wrote was the gospel itself. The question of whether human works were to play any part in the justification of sinners had to be answered clearly if the fledgling Christian movement was to prosper. And Paul was determined to answer it with total clarity. This explains the vigour and energy of his language, and the impact the letter has had down the centuries. Derek Thomas explains the issues dealt with in the letter and refutes the contentions of the so-called 'new perspective' on Paul. His book is an important addition to this expanding series of study guides.
